What We Did

Cybersecurity & Cloud Transformation

The collaboration began in 2023, when Stellenbosch University partnered with BUI to build a Microsoft Azure landing zone. “It was the first time I’d discussed petabytes,” recalls BUI Account Manager Matthew McKellar. “I didn’t know it was possible to have that much data!”

Over the years, as their relationship strengthened, the conversation turned to security. “We were flying blind, and unable to pick up anomalies,” explains Dr Zenobia Davidse, IT Director at Stellenbosch University. “We suspected that phishing was on the rise, but without the data we couldn’t prove it.”

She illustrates this point with two examples:
  1. Before they could create new training programs, they needed to understand who was logging on to their network.
  2. Replacing legacy systems was a priority for the team, but they needed data to show why this was necessary.

Initially the plan was to employ security specialists and build up their capabilities in-house. “But then Matthew explained BUI’s amazing CyberSoC offering,” says Zenobia. “So, we decided to work together. Why reinvent the wheel?”
A team effort

Which is not to say that they simply outsourced the project. Not by a long chalk. With 40,000 users and 6,000 managed devices, Stellenbosch University’s IT environment is vast, and improving security required an all-hands-on-deck approach.

Mario Walters, Continual Improvement Manager for BUI, was struck by the attitude of Stellenbosch University’s IT department. “They’re the best customer I’ve ever worked with. The level of commitment from this team is truly exceptional. They’ve grown so rapidly, and their security posture is now in a very strong position.” he says.

Stellenbosch University understands that maintaining strong security requires ongoing investment and vigilance. To this end, Zenobia is eager to highlight the contributions of her team members, each of whom has played a critical role in the ongoing project:
  • Mario Randelhoff – Manager: System Administration
  • Paul Merrit – HEAD: Microsoft System Administration
  • Regan Janari – Chief Cloud Specialist
  • Kagiso Shakoane – Senior System Administrator
  • Jurie Du Plooy – Chief Technical Risk Specialist
  • Terence Pietersen – System Administrator
  • Elvandre Barties - System Administrator
  • Bradley van der Venter – Senior Configuration Specialist
  • Ronel Reynecke – HEAD: End User Support
  • Malcolm Pillay – Senior Network Technician
  • Johan Loubser – Senior Linux System Administrator
  • Petro Uys – HEAD: IT Service Centre
  • Aiden January – System Support Specialist
  • Quinton Luiters – Technical Support Specialist

While she is extremely proud of her own team, Zenobia has been equally impressed by BUI’s attitude: “They’ve gone out of their way to make our team feel comfortable,” she says. “They haven’t just delivered solutions and walked away. They’ve consistently supported us, always just a call away – even at 3 a.m. on Christmas Eve.”
Vital statistics

Together, BUI and Stellenbosch University have transformed the university’s security posture by implementing the following:
  • Tenant and Configuration Assessment
Intune, Microsoft Defender, Cloud Apps, and Entra
  • Configuration Alignment
Adjustments made based on assessment findings.
  • Biweekly Meetings
Regular sessions to review progress and address key priorities.
  • Security Posture Recommendations
Identifying and advising on improvements to strengthen security.
  • Progress Tracking
Ongoing monitoring of security posture enhancements.
  • Vulnerability Recommendations
Providing guidance on mitigating identified vulnerabilities.
  • Workshops and Training
Educating and training support staff on implementing recommendations.
Onwards and upwards

With projects such as this, there’s no such thing as a final destination – only continual improvement. And both Stellenbosch University and BUI predict a long and fruitful future together.

“It was always very important for me to find a partner that not only understood our environment but was genuinely committed to improving our team’s skills and protecting the assets of the university,” says Zenobia. “Every time I add a request, Matthew takes the time to explain, collaborate, and ensure everything is clear.”

Matthew is equally glowing in his praise of Stellenbosch University. “They are very interactive, never late and super involved. They don’t sit back waiting for things to happen, they’re always looking for the next problem – and the next solution.”

“My team continuously scans the industry horizon to find new ways to innovate and integrate diverse systems to better understand our landscape,” adds Zenobia. “Only through the combined effort of Stellenbosch University stakeholders, IT staff and partners like BUI can we set the bar for innovation and leveraging technology to make a difference in the industry.”
